Build Wealth MN and Phyllis Wheatley Community Center are partnering to expand financial education and wealth-building opportunities for women in Minneapolis through the Women’s Wealth Building Initiative.
On February 28, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) celebrated the graduation of its latest cohort of women who completed Build Wealth MN’s Family Stabilization Plan (FSP) — a comprehensive financial education program designed to help families build credit, reduce debt and achieve long-term financial stability.
This partnership strengthens access to culturally responsive financial education for low-income women — particularly African American women — and supports pathways to generational wealth through homeownership and financial empowerment.
Expanding Financial Education for Women in Minneapolis
The Women’s Wealth Building Initiative connects participants to Build Wealth MN’s online Family Stabilization Plan, a structured financial literacy program that equips women with practical money management skills and personalized financial coaching.
Participants receive education and support in:
-
Credit building and credit repair
-
Debt reduction strategies
-
Budgeting and savings plans
-
Wealth building through homeownership
-
One-on-one counseling with a Build Wealth MN-certified HUD counselor
-
Potential savings match incentives to help reach financial goals
For many single mother-led households in Minneapolis, access to trusted financial guidance can be life-changing. By combining PWCC’s deep community roots in North Minneapolis with Build Wealth MN’s financial expertise, this partnership increases access to resources that promote stability and long-term success.
Celebrating Women’s Financial Empowerment
At the recent graduation celebration, PWCC recognized women who demonstrated commitment to strengthening their financial knowledge and building a more secure future for their families.
“These women have taken an important step toward strengthening their financial knowledge and creating lasting stability for their households,” said Kesha Walker, Women’s Wealth Building Initiative Coordinator at Phyllis Wheatley Community Center.
Graduating from the Family Stabilization Plan represents more than completing a course. It reflects dedication to financial empowerment, wealth building and generational stability.
A Proven Financial Literacy Program Serving Minneapolis Families
For more than 15 years, Build Wealth MN’s Family Stabilization Plan has supported over 7,000 families in building a strong financial foundation.
“The Family Stabilization Plan has empowered more than 7,000 families over the past 15 years to build a solid financial foundation,” said Jeffery Robinson, Senior Program Manager at Build Wealth MN. “Working in collaboration with a longstanding Northside organization like Phyllis Wheatley creates opportunities we could not achieve alone. Together, we are strengthening pathways to generational wealth in our community.”
Build Wealth MN, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit founded in 2004, provides financial education, HUD-certified counseling and homeownership support programs designed to close Minnesota’s racial homeownership gap. Through initiatives like 9000 Equities, the organization works to support 9,000 Black families on the path to homeownership.
Closing the Wealth Gap in North Minneapolis
The Women’s Wealth Building Initiative directly addresses the wealth gap impacting low-income women and families in Minneapolis. By offering culturally responsive financial literacy education and individualized coaching, the program supports both immediate financial stabilization and long-term wealth creation.
This collaboration between PWCC and Build Wealth MN demonstrates how community partnerships can expand economic opportunity and strengthen pathways to homeownership and generational wealth.
